Migration and displacement

Migration is a global phenomenon shaping our world at every turn and touching all of our lives.

Migrants help provide the building blocks for prosperous societies, bringing knowledge, support, networks, and skills in countries of origin, transit and destination.

Yet managing global migration is not without its challenges. Many migrants experience discrimination and exclusion, their rights are violated, their access to decent work is obstructed and even their lives are sometimes endangered. The numbers of refugees and internally displaced people have reached historic highs, and protracted displacement last years if not decades.

Anchored in the 2030 Agenda, Global Compacts on Migration and Refugees set forth a common vision to help achieve the migration dimensions of the Sustainable Development Goals. Building on those agreements, UNDP offers solutions to maximize the contribution migrants are already making to our societies and to ensure human mobility remains safe and inclusive.

With national and local governments, UN agencies, the private sector, civil society as well as with migrants and forcibly displaced people and their communities of origin, transit and destination, we work to prevent forced displacement, enhancing the resilience of migrants and forcibly displaced people and host communities, and expand the benefits of human mobility.

Call to action

The need to fight xenophobia, discrimination and exclusion, and promote cohesion as part of a new social contract is more important than ever.
